What is the next biggest breakthrough with CBD? It’s known that CBD’s have a high medical value, treating skin conditions down to fighting cancerous cells. Many studies have been conducted on the topic of cancer, and the Federal government had unwittingly announced that CBD does in fact fight cancer cells. *
“ We’ve shown that cannabinoids could play a role in treating one of the most aggressive cancers in adults. The results are promising… it could provide a way of breaking through tumours and saving more lives.”
– Dr. Wai Liu, in a November 2014 op-ed for The Washington Post.
This is huge for the CBD and cannabis industry considering that marijuana is still listed as a Schedule 1 drug under the Controlled Substances Act. Although we are getting closer to a huge medical breakthrough, more research needs to be done. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) still hasn’t approved any cannabis products for treatment of disease. As the laws on cannabis start to reform, we feel there will be a huge push in medical research for all cannabis products.
But what else is it capable of? More recent studies show that cannabinoids can have a positive
effect on Autism. What is Autism? For those who don’t know, shortly put Autism is a collection
of complex disorders that affect the development of the brain. Most core symptoms include: difficulties with communication and social interaction, and repetitive behaviors (sometimes these behaviors can be self-injurious).
In one case, Dr. Giovanni Martinez, a clinical psychologist from Puerto Rico, had treated an autistic child with CBD/hemp oil. He recounted after being treated twice a day with hemp oil spray (applied under the tongue), this patient was able to speak his first words. It was after three weeks that the child went from being “non-verbal to developing significant language skills.” Martinez also reported that, “initially the child would become so frustrated with his inability to communicate, he would act out and injure himself. But, now that he can express himself, he laughs and enjoys life.” In this case, if CBD’s can improve the quality of life for both the patient and the family, think of the possibilities in can bring for families all over the world.
Using CBD’s to treat children with Autism is still very new and doctors won’t prescribe cannabis to treat these children simply because no data exists to support the treatment. But as time goes on, more and more data will be uncovered and the healing properties of cannabis could be a game changer for Autistic children everywhere.
With continual research, stories like this bring hope that someday, pharmaceutical drugs may
not be our only option to treat certain conditions. We soon will have natural solutions that may
be able to produce better results and give patients and families the hope to keep on fighting.
